Attribute groups

Group related attributes so an editor can understand and complete a product without searching through a long list.

Key concepts and when to use them

An attribute group is an editorial grouping of related fields, such as identity, dimensions, materials, or care. It does not change the meaning or type of an attribute. An attribute can remain reusable while appearing in a group where it is helpful.

Permissions and preparation

Attribute groups are administrator-only definitions. Editors and viewers see the resulting record-detail layout but cannot maintain the groups.

Steps

  1. List the questions an editor answers while enriching a product.
  2. Create a short, plain-language group for each related set of questions.
  3. Link existing attributes to the group rather than creating copies.
  4. Place groups in the order editors normally complete them.
  5. Check a representative product page and adjust names or membership that cause hesitation.

Verification

Ask an editor unfamiliar with the model to complete one product. They should be able to find the needed field from its group name without opening unrelated sections.

Common mistakes and rules

  • Do not make a group a substitute for a product family.
  • Do not put unrelated fields together just to reduce the number of groups.
  • Do not create an attribute again because it belongs in more than one editorial context.

Work through a representative example

For a chair family, place seat height, seat depth, and back height in a Dimensions group. Keep upholstery material and care instructions in a separate Materials and care group. An editor should be able to complete each group while reviewing the product detail. If a field does not answer the group’s question, move it rather than widening the group name.

Groups are shared definitions, so test the same group on each product family that uses it. Keep required dimensions together, but do not add commercial fields merely because they are edited at the same time.
