Set the catalogue language policy first, then enter translations where customers need them.

Key concepts and when to use them

The Primary language holds the base value. Content languages are enabled for the catalogue. Default authoring languages are the additional languages editors normally use. A translation is the value of a supported field in a non-primary language. A missing translation is not the same as an intentionally empty translation.

Permissions and preparation

Language configuration is an administrator task. Admins set the Primary language, Content languages, and Default authoring languages. Editors can maintain available translations where a record form supports them. Viewers can read without changing content.

Steps

  1. Open Settings and choose Languages.
  2. Review the Primary language and Content languages before adding catalogue data.
  3. Set the Default authoring languages editors should normally use.
  4. Open a supported record and use the language controls available on that form to translate the supported fields.
  5. Enter the translated value, save it, and repeat for every field that customers will see.

Verification

Switch between the primary language and each enabled language. Confirm the right translated values are present and that missing translations are visible to the team rather than silently treated as complete.

Common mistakes and rules

  • Do not change the primary language as routine cleanup; review its effect across existing content first.
  • Do not disable a language that an active channel still uses.
  • Do not assume a translation is automatically stale when the base value changes; review important translations deliberately.

Work through a representative example

Set English as the Primary language, enable German under Content languages, and include German in Default authoring languages where editors should normally work in it. On a representative product, enter a German name and description where those editors are available. Open that product in both languages and check the saved values. Other forms may offer a different set of translated fields.
