Attributes

Define one named product fact for each value that must be captured, checked, searched, or delivered consistently.

Key concepts and when to use them

An attribute is a reusable field with a type such as text, number, date, list, or relationship. A product family decides which attributes apply. A list supplies controlled choices; a measure supplies units for quantities.

Permissions and preparation

Agree the business meaning, owner, and data type before creating an attribute. Admins and editors can work with catalogue definitions according to their assigned permissions. Viewers can inspect values only.

Steps

  1. Choose the product fact and write a short, unambiguous name and description.
  2. Select a type that matches the value people must enter and use later.
  3. Choose a controlled list, measure, or relationship where the value needs shared rules.
  4. Add the attribute to the relevant product family and place it in a useful group or panel.
  5. Enter sample values on representative products and review the output.

Verification

Check that two editors enter the same kind of value in the same way, that required facts appear for the intended family, and that the value can be used in filtering, export, or delivery as expected.

Common mistakes and rules

  • Do not create duplicate attributes for the same fact.
  • Do not use free text when a controlled list or measure is needed.
  • Do not use a category to make an attribute appear.

Work through a representative example

For a chair, create a Seat height attribute with a numeric type and the Length measure. Add it to the chair product family, then enter a value and unit on a sample chair. Compare it with another chair entered by a different editor. If both values can be filtered and exported without interpreting free text, the attribute is serving one clear fact. Do not duplicate it for another chair category.
